Shay served as an Observer at Nahal Oz, the base closest to Gaza. For many months, she and her friends from base saw exactly where things were heading, and insisted that their findings were not isolated incidents, but rather a gradual progression towards an invasion. The higher ranks did not take their reports seriously, and the observers met their deaths in a shelter, without weapons, without anyone to protect them. At the Nahal Oz Base, the writing was on the wall, in the most literal and chilling sense of the expression.
