Since he was a child, Yonatan was always on the lookout to try to challenge himself in new ways – to climb high, both physically and spiritually. Two months into basic training, Simchat Torah arrived, and Yonatan was on vacation from the army. He spent the holiday in Ofakim at the religious school where he had studied Torah the year before. He went there unarmed. When the fighting in Ofakim began, he left the shelter to fight with his bare hands. At first, he fought the terrorists with stones, but later found a weapon. When Yonatan’s parents discovered how he was found, they realized he died exactly as he had lived.
