Daniel made aliya with his family from South Africa when he was thirteen years old. He quickly integrated into Israeli society, and was known for his determination, strong convictions, and ability to form deep friendships. Daniel was a twenty-two-year-old tank commander and was stationed at the Nahal Oz Outpost near Gaza, where he led a tank crew nicknamed “Team Perez.” On October 7th, during the Hamas attack, he bravely fought many terrorists. While operating his tank's machine gun, a position that left him exposed, Daniel was taken hostage. His family found out on day 163 of the war that Daniel was fatally shot on October 7th and he was no longer living when he was kidnapped. His heroic actions, which cost him his life, saved many others at both the military outpost and the nearby Kibbutz Nahal Oz.
